An experienced San Diego pharmacist, Dr. Ashkan Khabazian holds a doctor of pharmacy from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and completed his postdoctoral work at Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego. A committed philanthropist, Dr. Ashkan Khabazian regularly provides financial support to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Clinical researchers at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital say they have found immune cells that help prevent mice from contracting lung infections during simulated chemotherapy. The results of the study were recently published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences peer-reviewed journal.

These immune cells were found to remain within the lungs of the mice over a one-month period once activated. When introduced into mice whose neutrophils were compromised from chemotherapy treatment, these cells provided protection from life-threatening lung infections.

Researchers admit they do not yet fully understand how these cells survive the conditions of chemotherapy, but they have ruled out other methods that cells typically use to ward off radiation and chemotherapy treatments.
