One of the most challenging martial arts to master, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has increased in popularity with the rise of MMA fighting, as it is one of the primary styles employed by competitors in these sports. It isn’t just a practice for professional fighters, though; Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has a lot to offer the amateur.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu teaches the value of continuous effort, and beginners often find themselves tossed about the mat and easily submitted. With hard work, however, it won’t be long before the amateur begins to see progress, and isn’t beaten so easily. Achievements in the sport are easily measurable, and lessons are translated over to everyday life as well.

Additionally, there are many health benefits of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The practice is beneficial because it teaches the practitioner to use his or her body as a single unit rather than different components. Since many people tend to do fragmented, sedentary activities throughout the day (sitting in chairs, on the couch, etc.) the body adjusts to moving in suboptimal ways. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu promotes natural movement and flexibility, leading to greater mobility and overall increased musculoskeletal health.

An experienced San Diego pharmacist, Dr. Ashkan Khabazian holds a doctor of pharmacy from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and completed his postdoctoral work at Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego. A committed philanthropist, Dr. Ashkan Khabazian regularly provides financial support to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Clinical researchers at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital say they have found immune cells that help prevent mice from contracting lung infections during simulated chemotherapy. The results of the study were recently published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences peer-reviewed journal.

These immune cells were found to remain within the lungs of the mice over a one-month period once activated. When introduced into mice whose neutrophils were compromised from chemotherapy treatment, these cells provided protection from life-threatening lung infections.

Researchers admit they do not yet fully understand how these cells survive the conditions of chemotherapy, but they have ruled out other methods that cells typically use to ward off radiation and chemotherapy treatments.
